LACMTA's HQ achieves LEED 'gold' designation

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) has received the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) “gold” designation for sustainable energy and environmental design for its Gateway headquarters building adjacent to Union Station in downtown Los Angeles.

Only a few U.S. transit agencies’ headquarters have received the designation, LACMTA officials said in a prepared statement.

The LEED gold designation recognizes LACMTA’s “continuing contribution to advancing green construction for a healthier workplace, cleaner environment and efficient operations,” LACMTA officials said.

The U.S. Green Building Council issues the certification to buildings that reduce greenhouse gas emissions through improved building use of energy and water; improved indoor environmental quality; and responsible use of resources.

Gateway’s improved performance resulted in a 6 percent reduction in electricity usage, a 13 percent decrease in natural gas usage and a 48 percent decline in water usage.
