Saskatchewan, California cities seek to redevelop rail properties

The city of Regina, Saskatchewan, recently released a redevelopment plan for a 53-acre site that includes a Canadian Pacific yard. The city plans to create retail, commercial, entertainment and residential space on two properties.

The “Regina Revitalization” project was sparked by CP’s plan to move its container yard to the Global Transportation Hub on the city's west side within the next year, Regina officials said in a prepared statement.

Meanwhile, the city of Sacramento, Calif., is advancing plans to redevelop part of an area known as the “Railyards” as the site for a new courthouse and court offices. The site offers access to Amtrak, light-rail and bus service.

The city is working with the Railyards land owner, real estate firm Inland American, to relocate tracks running through the site. The city contracted Granite Construction Inc. to relocate about 2.3 miles of track, build passenger-rail tracks and platforms, and perform other work by December 2012. The 245-acre redevelopment plan also calls for creating residential and commercial properties.
