Caltrain has completed a $300,000 project that expanded capacity on each train to accommodate more bicycles.

The project, completed six months early, ensures each train is equipped with two bike cars. The agency’s Gallery-car trains now are equipped with two bike cars with a capacity for 40 bikes in each car. The newer Bombardier cars can accommodate 24 bikes per car.

Since 2008, Caltrain has increased onboard bike capacity by more than 50 percent. Seventy percent of all trains now can accommodate up to 80 bikes. In 2009, Caltrain reconfigured the bike cars to increase overall capacity by 27 percent, agency officials said in a prepared statement.

In addition, the agency recently amended its policy to allow children as young as six years old to bring a bicycle on a train. Previously, children had to be at least 12 years old.
