TransLink updates transportation expansion plan

With a government agreement in place that will provide millions of dollars in additional annual revenue, TransLink has rolled out an updated version of its plan to expand the Metro Vancouver transit system and carry out other projects.

Titled “Moving Forward,” the plan originally was drafted in 2010, but lacked an approved funding formula, according to TransLink. Earlier this month, the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation and the government of British Columbia announced an agreement to provide the agency $70 million in additional annual revenue. As a result, the plan is circulating for a final round of public comments, TransLink officials said in a prepared statement.

If approved by the mayors’ council, the plan will provide Metro Vancouver’s $400 million share of funding for the seven-mile Evergreen Line SkyTrain extension from the Longheed Town Centre to Coquitlam Town Centre, enabling construction to begin.

The Evergreen Line extension would include five stations and 28 new SkyTrain vehicles.
