The Toronto Rocket has been launched.

Yesterday, Canadian government officials and the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) welcomed Toronto Rocket subway trains into revenue service.

The subway trains feature additional passenger capacity, enhanced safety and security components, better customer information systems and accessibility, and reduced energy consumption, according to the TTC. In 2006, TTC awarded a contract to Bombardier Transportation to build the cars; the first set of cars was delivered in October 2010.

Over the next two years, older cars on the Yonge-University-Spaldina line will be replaced with the new Bombardier model.

The Canadian government is contributing $91.6 million over five years to help fund 78 Toronto Rocket subway cars, or the equivalent of 13 six-car trainsets, which are estimated to cost $231.2 million. The province of Ontario has allocated $83 million and the city of Toronto, $56.6 million.
