Transportation improvements will drive productivity in Toronto area, study says

Plans for major transportation investments in Canada’s Toronto and Hamilton, Ontario, areas will create jobs and generate economic growth during construction over the next decade, according to a new study by the Conference Board of Canada.

Urban transportation improvements also will provide broader benefits that contribute to a more competitive and productive economy, the study concludes.

Funded by Metrolinx with support from the board’s Centre for Transportation Infrastructure, the Metrolinx Big Move project in Toronto will positively impact the economy, according to the study. A regional transportation plan’s $19 billion in real capital investment between 2009 and 2020 “would generate a direct, indirect and induced economic impact of $22.7 billion, an increase in real GDP of $1.19 for every dollar spent,” conference board officials said in a prepared statement.
