About 75,000 riders tried Hampton Roads Transit’s (HRT) new ‘The Tide’ light-rail service during its opening weekend in Norfolk, Va., according to an article published by The Virginia Pilot that’s posted on HRT’s website.

The light-rail service was launched Aug. 19 and offered free rides through the first weekend. However, HRT extended the free preview to this coming weekend, the newspaper reported. Fares of $1.50 will be collected starting Aug. 29.

Passenger counts are being taken daily, but it’s still too early to tell what an average weekday ridership count might be, HRT President and Chief Executive Officer Philip Shucet said in the article.
