Sen. Schumer calls on three federal agencies to help fund Ronkonkoma Hub project

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) recently called on the U.S. Department of Transportation, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to help fund the Ronkonkoma Hub transit-oriented development project on Long Island, N.Y.

The project calls for building a roundabout at MTA Long Island Rail Road’s Ronkonkoma station, redeveloping blighted properties around the station into retail, office and housing space, and constructing sewer infrastructure.

Public investment in infrastructure and federal recognition for the project will provide an added incentive for private developers to invest in the hub, Schumer said in a prepared statement.

“Ronkonkoma Hub has the potential to not only reshape the face of the most widely used transit center on the Long Island Rail Road, but it can serve as a model for communities throughout the region that are looking to revitalize their communities in and around transportation hubs,” he said.

Schumer is asking the federal agencies to explore and identify potential funding sources to support the 50-acre project.
