On Tuesday, a rebuilt skyway reopened in downtown St. Paul, Minn. — one of a series of project elements to be completed over the next month that will wrap up the first two years of heavy construction on the Central Corridor light-rail line.

About 32 percent of the project now is completed, Metropolitan Council officials said in a prepared statement.

Key completed or started project elements include: rebuilding and reopening the skyway over Fifth Avenue in St. Paul; finishing the Central Corridor portion of the Union Depot restoration; installing embedded track in downtown St. Paul; starting curved track installation; installing structural steel at six stations; and building a train bridge over Interstate 35W.

The Central Corridor light-rail project is designed to link downtown St. Paul and downtown Minneapolis along Washington and University avenues via the state Capitol and University of Minnesota.
