The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) will receive a $5.7 million grant through the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) Transit Investment in Greenhouse Gas and Energy Reduction (TIGGER) program.

The funds will be used to build Tri-Rail’s first “green,” Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design-certified station in Pompano Beach, Fla., SFRTA officials said in a prepared statement.

The rebuilt station will generate 100 percent of its energy demands through solar panels. The project will send excess energy to the power grid and store daytime energy for nighttime lighting of the station parking area and other parts of the facility, SFRTA officials said.

The station will be the first in Florida to be 100 percent-supported by solar energy, they said.
