On Wednesday, Massachusetts Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray joined state and local officials on a tour of the construction site for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) Newmarket commuter-rail station on the Fairmount Corridor.

When completed, the $7.6 million station will link people to jobs and help generate economic development in the area, MBTA officials said in a prepared statement. The Newmarket district is the largest industrial area in Boston, where more than 1,000 businesses generate combined annual revenue of $4 billion, they said.

“As we strategically invest in infrastructure across the state, improvements to the Fairmount Line will support one of the busiest transportation corridors in the metro Boston area,” Murray said.

Newmarket Station is the last of four commuter-rail stations under construction as part of the Fairmount Commuter Rail Line rehabilitation project, which began in 2005. The station will feature 800-foot-high level platforms to allow for direct platform-to-coach boarding, canopies, passenger shelters, benches and windscreens, and electronic message signs.
