MTA Metro-North Railroad’s ridership rose 1.4 percent in 2011 to 82 million rides, with gains reported on all lines and in all markets.

On the railroad’s three main lines — Hudson, Harlem and New Haven — ridership increased 1.7 percent compared with 2010. However, West of Hudson, where the Port Jervis Line was shut down for three months after Tropical Storm Irene damaged the track, ridership plummeted 11.4 percent compared with the previous year.

Still, overall ridership was the second highest in Metro-North’s history, railroad officials said in a prepared statement.

“This growth is the continuation of a long-term trend and is a result of our unwavering focus on reliability, cleanliness, customer service and safety,” said Metro-North President Howard Permut.
