On Friday, Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced $86 million worth of improvements will be made at seven stations along the Chicago Transit Authority’s (CTA) North Red Line during the next several weeks.

The project, which involves some of the system’s oldest stations, is designed to improve the Jarvis, Morse Granville, Thorndale, Berwyn, Argyle and Lawrence stations. Funding will come from a mix of federal and local dollars, according to a prepared statement issued by Emanuel’s office.

“While federal funding for new mass transit projects is highly competitive in Washington, approximately $80 million of the total $86 million we’re announcing … is federal funding,” said Durbin.

Project elements include viaduct repairs, platform repairs or replacement, station water-proofing, lighting improvements and new station house finishes.

“Millions of people use the CTA every day, and these investments will pave the way for future economic growth and strengthen our transportation network for generations to come,” Quinn said.

CTA funding for the seven station projects is part of the agency’s $1 billion Red Line Capital Investment initiative announced in November 2011. In addition to the station work, the $1 billion initiative includes other projects on the Red Line’s Howard branch.
