Starting May 21, New Mexico Rail Runner Express will operate a new express train service between Albuquerque and Sante Fe, N.M., and add new amenities.

Riders using the new express service will be able to cut commute times by 20 to 25 minutes in each direction between the two cities, Rail Runner Express officials said in a prepared statement.

The express train will skip three stations and operate with a second locomotive on the train to save time during the steep climb on the way to Santa Fe. The express service will operate in the morning and evening.

New amenities include a new weekend schedule, an expanded “quiet car” program, a mobile phone ticketing service and a commuter tax benefit that allows businesses and their employees to set aside pre-tax dollars for transit passes.

With the new amenities also comes a fare increase, which Rail Runner’s board approved after a series of public meetings last fall. Fares for one-way trips and day passes will increase by $1 to $2; monthly passes will go up $4 to $11, they said. The change in fare structure marks the first time Rail Runner Express has increased its fares, officials said.
