Santa Clara transit agency switches to smart card fare system

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) will go “paperless” effective July 1 by replacing paper transit passes with a regional smart card known as the “Clipper” pass.

VTA riders will be required to pay for rides on light-rail trains and buses with the reloadable, all-in-one card, which resembles a credit card. The card keeps track of passes, discount tickets, ride books and cash value that riders can load onto it, VTA officials said in a prepared statement.

“Riders no longer have to have exact change or carry multiple passes from different transit agencies,” said VTA Chairman Ken Yeager.
