Canadian transit association launches campaign to promote public transit

The Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA) has launched its summer-long online campaign to highlight the importance of investing in public transit.

“Take Action! Write to the Minister!” is a grassroots advocacy campaign designed to rally CUTA members and the public to voice support for transit investments and call on the federal government to increase public transit funding, CUTA officials said in a prepared statement.

As part of the campaign, CUTA also plans to send a letter to Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities Denis Lebel with recommendations to make public transit an integral part of the federal government’s next long-term infrastructure plan.

Several months ago, Lebel launched a formal process to develop and adopt Canada’s next long-term plan. As part of the process, he announced a series of roundtable consultations across Canada with all provinces and territories to provide input into the next generation of infrastructure programs.

The vast majority of federal funding over the past 10 years came from the Building Canada Plan, which will expire in 2014.
