Yesterday, officials from the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) and the city of Mendoza, Argentina, finalized the sale of 24 additional San Diego Trolley U-2 model light-rail transit vehicles to Mendoza for $5.1 million.
MTS is about half way through replacing the U-2 cars with 65 new low-floor vehicles, manufactured by Siemens, to operate on all trolley lines. Mendota now has purchased 35 cars from MTS for a new light-rail line that connects five urban areas around the city.
"The sale of these cars will mark the beginning of a new legacy for our trend-setting Blue Line Trolley operations," said MTS Chairman Harry Mathis.
MTS has started to operate the new cars on the Green Line, which earlier this month was extended from Old Town to downtown. The cars will begin to run on the Orange Line in early 2013 and on the Blue Line in mid-2014.
The car purchase is part of a $720 million project to improve stations from Old Town to the international border at San Ysidro; improve track, switches, signaling, communication and overhead electric wire; and boost freight capacity.
