Metrolink prepares for more riders during 'Carmageddon II'

This weekend, Metrolink will add seven round-trips on its Ventura County, Calif., line between Los Angeles and Chatsworth to provide more public transportation options during southern California's second "Carmageddon" event — the two-day closure of a 10-mile stretch of Interstate 405 so that construction crews can complete major bridge work.

The service will be in addition to regularly scheduled trains on the Antelope Valley, Orange County, Inland Empire-Orange County and San Bernadino lines, Metrolink officials said in a prepared statement.

A $10 weekend pass will provide riders with unlimited systemwide travel privileges from 7 p.m. Friday until the last train runs on Sunday.

A year ago, Metrolink experienced record weekend ridership during the first two-day closure of I-405, an event that became known as "Carmageddon" because the stretch of L.A.-area freeway is one of the nation's busiest.

To attract more ridership this year, Metrolink and Los Angeles World Airports partnered to allow Metrolink's monthly passholders with a boarding pass to ride the Flyaway service for free on their flight date. Also, Metrolink recently launched a retention program that allows local businesses to offer discounts to riders.
