Today, Metrolink marks its 20th anniversary. Since it began operations on Oct. 26, 1992, the West Coast's largest commuter-rail system has transported 100 million people throughout southern California, Metrolink officials said in a prepared statement.

"This is a tremendous milestone," said Chairman Richard Katz. "Our employees and crews take great pride in their work, and being part of this occasion is very special for everyone associated with Metrolink."

The system began operations with three routes, 11 stations and 112 miles across two counties. Metrolink initially carried 2,300 daily riders. Today, the agency operates seven routes, 55 stations and 512 miles of track in six counties. Weekday ridership averages more than 44,000 boardings.

In 2009, Metrolink became the first railroad in the United States to install inward-facing video cameras on its locomotives. In 2010, the agency purchased 137 Guardian Fleet cars equipped with crash energy management technology. And now, Metrolink is dedicated to implementing a systemwide positive train control system before the federal deadline of Dec. 31, 2015, agency officials said.
