Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) rail service resumed today at the Hoboken Station in New Jersey, with trains operating to and from the 33rd Street station in Manhattan for the first time since Hurricane Sandy struck the East Coast last month.

Service began following weeks of extensive, around-the-clock repairs, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie announced in a joint statement.

The return of service to all 13 stations comes less than eight weeks after the storm decimated the entire PATH system, flooded tunnels with eight feet of water, and destroyed critical signal and switching systems, they said.

Resumption of direct service between Hoboken and the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan remains several weeks away, pending ongoing repairs to badly damaged signal equipment.

Meanwhile, PATH officials announced Michael Marino has been promoted to assistant director/general superintendent. Most recently, he served as superintendent of PATH's Way and Structures Division.

Marino has more than 40 years of transportation experience. In his new role, he will oversee operations and maintenance functions, including for the Transportation, Car Equipment, Way and Structures, and Power, Signals and Communications divisions.

Marino will be responsible for ensuring that the operation and associated systems and equipment run safely, reliably and efficiently, and are on time, on budget and in accordance with the business plan, PATH officials said.
