The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) has closed the Fifth Avenue Trolley Station for next three months as part of a $270 million trolley renewal project.

The station, which closed Monday, is the last in the downtown section to be renovated, MTS officials said in a prepared statement. The work entails raising the platform to accommodate new low-floor trolley cars, and installing new pavers, passenger shelters and next-departure electronic signs. The platform will be lengthened to provide more room for pedestrian crossings.

The trolley renewal project is slated for completion by 2014’s end. All stations to San Ysidro on the Blue Line and Green Line, and from La Mesa Boulevard to America Plaza on the Orange Line, are being renovated. By April, all Orange and Green line stations will be completed and work will begin on the Blue Line stations.

When completed, new low-floor trolley cars will operate throughout the MTS trolley network. Work will include “quiet zone” improvements in the downtown area for heavy rail.
