A new station on the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's (MBTA) Orange Line is under construction between Wellington and Sullivan Square stations.

The new Assembly Station project is "well under way," MBTA officials said in a prepared statement. Subway track infrastructure work has been completed to enable train traffic to be shifted to the east, creating space for Assembly Station's future platforms.

In addition, work in recent months has included rehabilitating the test track, reconfiguring the third rail, and relocating the signal and communication systems, MBTA officials said.

Since January, installation of concrete piles has been performed during weekend Orange Line diversions. The piles will support the new southbound tracks and platform areas of the future station. The size of the equipment involved and proximity to the tracks right of way will require weekend diversions to be slated through March 9.

The decision to perform work on weekends or during early access nights was made after reviewing the impact on service and safety, MBTA officials said.

The project is slated for completion in 2014, when Assembly Station will serve the Assembly Square redevelopment district in Somerville. The city is the site of a proposed large-scale, mixed use redevelopment project featuring 2,100 residential units, more than 2.75 million square feet of retail and office space, and a 200-room hotel.
