Metrolinx has issued a construction tender to build a second track on a three-mile section of GO Transit's Stouffville corridor to serve residents in the Ontario communities of Scarborough, Markham and Stouffville.Work is scheduled to begin this spring between Kennedy Road north of the Milliken GO Station and Marilyn Avenue north of the Agincourt GO Station. This is the first part of a multi-year project that will expand and improve 10.6 miles of the corridor from Scarborough Junction to the Unionville GO Station, Metrolinx officials said in a press release."These types of improvements are critical in helping us bring faster, more frequent, two-way Regional Express Rail service to our GO train network," said Metrolinx President and Chief Executive Officer Bruce McCuaig. "This project will help us give our customers more transit choices that will save them time and make it easier to get where they want to go."
Double-tracking the remainder of the 10.6-miles and additional station upgrades are in the planning and design phases, with construction expected to begin in 2016, Metrolinx officials said.
The projects are part of the Metrolinx regional transportation plan for the greater Toronto and Hamilton areas.
