Massachusetts Gov. Charles Baker last week joined China Railway Rolling Stock Corp. (CRRC) President Weiping Yu and a handful of state and local officials to break ground on a $95 million rail-car manufacturing facility in Springfield, Mass.

Scheduled for completion by fall 2017, the facility will be used to build subway cars for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's (MBTA) Orange and Red subway lines.

More than 100 jobs are expected to be created during construction, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation's (MassDOT) blog.

"As our efforts to deliver the world-class transit system taxpayers pay for and deserve continue, new subway cars built right here in the commonwealth will deliver more reliability and new opportunities for employment and economic development for the people of Massachusetts," said Baker.

The MBTA had previously awarded CRRC a $566 million contract to design and manufacture 284 vehicles for the Orange and Red lines.

Rail-car production at the new plant is expected to begin in 2018, with the first cars to be completed in January 2019, MassDOT officials said.

The facility marks CRRC's first transportation project in the United States, according to MassDOT.
