TriMet opens new Orange Line light-rail route

Oregon Gov. Kate Brown on Saturday joined other local and federal officials to mark the opening of Portland's new MAX Orange light-rail route.

Overseen by the Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet), the $1.49 billion Orange Line finished on time and under budget by about $48 million, TriMet officials said in a press release.

"The Orange Line demonstrates smart transportation investments are critical to our economic growth," Brown said.

The 7.3-mile light-rail line extends from Portland State University, across the new Tilikum Crossing Bridge to southeast Portland, Milwaukie and north Clackamas County.

Agency officials hailed the new line as TriMet’s "most sustainable light-rail construction project.” It features eco-track, stormwater treatment, eco-roofs, rooftop solar panels, habitat restoration and regenerative energy storage.

About $65 million was invested in improved bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, including 10.3 miles of new or improved sidewalks, 7.8 miles of new or improved bicycle facilities and 446 bike parking spaces, TriMet officials said.
