UTA streetcar ridership jumps by almost 19 percent in 2015

So far in 2015, the Utah Transit Authority's (UTA) S-Line streetcar registered more than 363,000 boardings, marking an 18.8 percent increase compared with the same period last year, the agency announced late last week.

The figures reflect ridership between Jan. 1 and Nov. 30.

The UTA logged the increase as it permanently extended the streetcar's schedule to match that of its TRAX light-rail routes, agency officials said in a press release.

The schedule change is part of a UTA initiative to pass cost savings on to the public, they said.

"We're pleased to see S-Line ridership has increased by nearly 20 percent over the last year," said UTA Interim Chief Executive Officer Jerry Benson. "As the communities of Sugar House and South Salt Lake continue to grow, we expect more riders to adopt this unique form of transportation as a way to explore the neighborhood, access businesses and connect with other UTA services."

S-Line streetcars operate at a maximum speed of 25 mph along a 2-mile corridor through Salt Lake City's Sugar House District.
