Metrolinx announced yesterday that it has activated the PRESTO electronic fare payment system on more than 100 of the Toronto Transit Commission's (TTC) legacy streetcars.By year's end, PRESTO devices will come online on all of the TTC's remaining streetcars, Metrolinx officials said in a press release. The program, which is also available at some TTC subway stations, uses smart-card technology that stores funds in a secure account, replacing the need for tickets, tokens, passes or cash, according to PRESTO's website.Work continues to expand PRESTO across the entire TTC network by the end of 2016. A new TTC fare gate with integrated PRESTO payment will be tested in the first quarter of next year. After that trial is complete, the fare gates all be installed in 43 TTC subway stations that are not yet PRESTO-enabled, Metrolinx officials said. When PRESTO is fully deployed, there will be more than 10,000 electronic fare payment devices in surface vehicles and at subway stations, Metrolinx officials said."The TTC is committed to enhancing fare payment options for our customers. By adding PRESTO to our legacy streetcar fleet, we've made it easier for our riders to take the TTC," said TTC Chair Josh Colle.Beyond the TTC, PRESTO is available at GO Transit, the Union Pearson Express, and eight local transit agencies across Ottawa and the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.
