Valley Metro officials have scheduled a meeting next week to update the public on a proposed light-rail line extension in Mesa, Ariz.

Known as the Gilbert Road Extension, the project calls for expanding the existing light-rail system nearly 2 miles east from Main Street to Gilbert Road. The plan also includes two stations, a transit center and a park-and-ride lot.

The April 28 meeting will give attendees information about the initial design and construction activities, as well as station art concepts. Additionally, Valley Metro's project team will be available for questions, agency officials said in a press release.

Valley Metro will hold a similar meeting on May 3.

The extension is in the final design and pre-construction phase, according to the project's website. Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. is developing the project's final design, which is 60 percent complete, while project construction contractor Stacy and Witbeck/Sundt is performing utility survey work.
