Metrolink's board late last week voted to decrease fares for trips that are 20 miles or less in an effort to increase ridership. The lower fares will go into effect July 1, marking the second time in 2016 that fares for short-distance trips have been decreased on Metrolink trains, the Los Angeles-area commuter railroad's officials said in a press release. "Lowering fares for these short trips will make Metrolink more appealing and competitive with other forms of transportation," said Metrolink Chair Shawn Nelson. In January, Metrolink lowered fares by introducing a $3 "station-to-station" fare pilot program for six months. Slated to end June 30, the program generated "significant" rider interest for short-distanced options, Metrolink officials said. The station-to-station pilot was only available for select tickets, but the board's most recent action makes the reduced short-distance fares available for all ticket types, including monthly passholders. Those with monthly passes could save up to $84 a month, Metrolink officials said.
