Canadian government officials on Monday marked the completion of track installation for the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension.

Crews finished installing track for the 5.3-mile extension, along with four sections of special track, according to a press release issued by the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), which is project manager for the extension.

The project extends the TTC's Line 1 from its terminus at the Downsview Station in Toronto to Vaughan, Ontario. The extension will feature six new subway stations and three new commuter parking lots, along with a bus terminal for the TTC, York Region Transit and GO Transit.

The Toronto-York Spadina extension is aimed at improving transit service by supporting a multimodal transportation network in the Toronto area, TTC officials said.

The Canadian government has committed up to $697 million for the $3.18 billion project, while the province of Ontario has provided $870 million. In addition, the city of Toronto will contribute $907 million and the Regional Municipality of York will contribute $606 million toward the project. (All figures in Canadian dollars.)

Service on the new extension is slated to start at the end of 2017.
