Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and British Columbia Premier Christy Clark late last week announced an agreement to invest $900 million (in Canadian dollars) in public transit projects across the province.

Canada's federal government will provide $460 million, while British Columbia will contribute $308 million. The remaining funds will come from contributions from municipalities, according to a press release issued by Trudeau's office.

The funds will be used to buy new rail cars for TransLink's SkyTrain service in Vancouver, in addition to upgrading SkyTrain stations.

The funding also will go toward the design and planning for a rapid transit service south of Fraser and extending SkyTrain's Millennium Line.
