New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA) crews on Monday began the curb-to-curb asphalt overlay for the new North Rampart Street/St. Claude Avenue streetcar line. The work marks the end of construction on the 1.6-mile extension.

The overlay will occur one lane at a time, beginning with the inside travel lanes. The project communications team will work with businesses, residents and property owners along the corridor to inform them of parking lane closures and other impacts, RTA officials said in a press release.

The work is expected to take three to four weeks. The line's grand opening is slated for late August or early September.

The North Rampart streetcar line will connect New Orleans' French Quarter and Treme neighborhoods to the Loyola and Canal Street lines.

Vehicles that will run on the line will come from the streetcar stock that operates along the existing streetcar routes. The units are replicas of the historic 1920s-era Perley Thomas streetcars.
