Transport Canada and VIA Rail Canada Inc. late last week announced a $34.4 million investment (in Canadian dollars) for improvements to the railroad’s stations and maintenance facilities in the Windsor-Quebec City corridor.

At VIA Rail’s maintenance facilities, crews will make repairs and upgrades to various mechanical mechanical and electrical systems. In addition, they'll perform roof replacement and repair, water treatment, and heating and ventilation system work.

Similar upgrades will be made to stations throughout the corridor, according to a press release issued by Transport Canada.

An additional $400,000 will go toward the remediation of a federal contaminated site at VIA Rail’s station in Edmonton, Alberta.

"This investment allows VIA Rail's rail corridor infrastructure to remain safe and secure while at the same time improving the passenger experience by making it more accessible and efficient for everyday Canadians," said Minister of Transport Marc Garneau.
