The Bi-State Development Research Institute in St. Louis, Mo., will receive a $940,251 federal grant to help develop a mobile clinic that will provide health screenings at several MetroLink light-rail stations in northern St. Louis County in Missouri.The funds are part of the Federal Transit Administration's (FTA) Ride to Wellness Demonstration and Innovative Coordinated Access and Mobility Grant program. Earlier this week, the FTA announced it awarded a total $7.3 million in grants for innovative ways to connect people to health care via transit.The not-for-profit Bi-State research institute is part of the Bi-State Development, which operates MetroLink. The mobile clinic will be developed with the St. Louis County Department of Public Health.Commuters can receive health screenings such blood pressure checks and cholesterol tests at the mobile clinic. In addition, the program will provide non-emergency medical transportation to and from appointments using transit subsidies. The St. Louis program was designed to provide underserved residents with a bridge in care until they are able to enroll in health insurance coverage options available through the Affordable Care Act, according to an FTA press release. Bi-State was one of 19 FTA grant awardees in 16 states.
