Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and Metrolinx have issued a request for qualifications (RFQ) for firms to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the Hurontario light-rail project.The request outlines the scope of work required, which includes 12.4 miles of rail between the Port Credit GO Transit station in Mississauga, Ontario, and Steeles Avenue in Brampton, Ontario.The selected firm also would be responsible for building a light-rail vehicle maintenance and storage facility and fleet procurement."The [project] will help transform Hurontario Street into a vibrant people-oriented corridor connecting communities and accommodating anticipated growth," IO officials said in a press release, adding that the project will significantly improve transit travel times.The RFQ is the first step toward finding a project team. IO and Metrolinx will evaluate submissions to prequalify entities with the experience and financial capacity to complete the project.Qualified teams will be invited to respond to a request for proposals in spring 2017.IO is a Canadian Crown corporation that supports Ontario infrastructure projects.
