The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) last week released a draft supplemental environmental impact statement for the second phase of the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Silicon Valley extension. Prepared by VTA and the Federal Transit Administration, the statement addresses the environmental effects of the proposed last 6 miles of the BART extension into downtown San Jose and Santa Clara, Calif.The alignment would include a 5-mile subway through downtown San Jose and the potential for four stations. Depending on funding availability, initial revenue service on the BART extension is expected to begin in late 2025 or 2026.The full 16-mile BART Silicon Valley Extension will begin south of the future Warm Springs station in Fremont, Calif., and terminate in Santa Clara. VTA is managing the project in cooperation with BART.
