Sound Transit's Lynnwood Link light-rail extension will receive $100 million in federal funds from the $1.1 trillion spending bill approved by Congress yesterday. The funding is the first installment of a potential $1.174 billion full funding grant agreement for the project, which calls for extending light-rail service from Northgate Mall in Seattle to Lynnwood, Wash. Construction on the 8.5-mile extension is slated to begin next year, Sound Transit officials said in a press release."We're hitting 'go' on a massive capital investment program that will give our citizens a real way out of ever worsening congestion. Federal funding will continue to be a critically important contributor to our success," said Sound Transit Chief executive officer Peter Rogoff. "This first grant installment for Lynnwood Link will help us finally deliver light rail to Snohomish County and get thousands of daily riders off of the traffic on [Interstate-5]."The overall federal funding bill, which also includes money for Caltrain's electrification project, now goes to President Donald Trump for his signature.
