The Kansas City Streetcar Authority (KCSA) has selected a team led by HDR Inc. to conduct a study for a proposed streetcar extension to the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

The team will examine alignment details, station locations and cost estimates for the extension, according to a KCSA press release. The team also will study the initiation of the federal funding process.

The primary study area extends from downtown Kansas City and Union Station to the university in the vicinity of 51st Street and Brookside Boulevard.

In addition to HDR, the team includes HNTB Corp., Burns & McDonnell, Trekk Design Group, Hg Consult, Parson and Associates, VSM Engineering, and Architectural and Historical Research.

KCSA has partnered with the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) on the effort.

"We are thrilled to be working hand-in-hand with our partner, the KCATA, to detail specific plans for a southern streetcar extension and related bus improvements connecting downtown to the University of Missouri-Kansas City campus," said KCSA Executive Director Tom Gerend. "This effort is a critical step towards advancing the region's transit vision and completing the due diligence that will be required to make this vision a reality."

KCSA also is studying an extension to the Missouri River and Berkley Riverfront Park.
