TransLink has begun welcoming new retailers to its SkyTrain stations for the first time in eight years.

The agency's retail real estate program generates CA$500,000 each year, a figure that's anticipated to double over the next five years, TransLink officials said in a press release issued last week.

The growing revenue stream helps offset costs for TransLink riders. And while station footprints will remain the same, retail locations are being added as part of ongoing renovations, they said.

A&W is one of the latest retailers to begin operating at TransLink's Main Street-Science World SkyTrain station.

In 2014, TransLink relaunched its retail real estate program. Nine retailers currently operate on the agency's property.

The agency manages more than 10,000 square feet of retail space; by 2022, that's expected to grow to 17,000 square feet.
