The Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) project yesterday began a series of "preview rides" to offer locals a chance to try the new rail system. The preview trips will continue July 1 and 4. On those days, SMART will offer three trips each. Project leaders developed its preview ride schedule based on more than 1,000 responses from the public identifying which stations they would use and days they would ride, according to a SMART press release. SMART's initial 43 miles of rail include 10 stations between Sonoma County Airport and downtown San Rafael, California. The full project will extend 70 miles to connect passengers with jobs, education centers, retail hubs and housing along the Sonoma-Marin corridor.
