Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario (IO) have issued a request for qualifications (RFQ) for firms to design, build and finance GO Transit rail station improvement projects.

The infrastructure upgrades are needed to accommodate service increases resulting from the GO Regional Express Rail (RER) project, which calls for electrifying core segments of GO Transit's network.

The station enhancement work includes installing new fare devices, upgrading stations' electrical rooms and adding digital signage.

Teams that qualify for the project will be invited to respond to a request for proposals in winter.

The CA$13.5 billion RER project requires a host of infrastructure upgrades, including improving grade crossings, installing new track and adding new locomotives.

Meanwhile, IO and Metrolinx in July announced the prequalified bidders for a separate project to improve Toronto's Union Station. The prequalified teams are Graham Construction Rail Solutions and EllisDon Infrastructure Transit, which includes AECOM Canada Ltd.

The Union Station project includes the construction of a new platform, development of a new concourse area below the platform and providing a new emergency power system.
