Seattle slots funds for housing near new light-rail station

The Seattle Office of Housing yesterday announced $15 million in funding to build affordable homes near Sound Transit's future Roosevelt light-rail station.

The office has joined Sound Transit in issuing a request for proposals (RFP) for the project. The RFP is for one of several transit-oriented development (TOD) plans that Sound Transit is advancing this year, Sound Transit officials said in a press release.

Other sites include properties in Seattle's First Hill and Capitol Hill neighborhoods, as well as near the Angle Lake station in SeaTac, Washington.

The Roosevelt Station will open for service in 2021 as one of three stations on the Northgate Link Extension. The affordable housing will be built on a site adjacent to the station. The property is expected to become available for construction in early 2020.

The authorizing legislation for the Sound Transit 3 ballot initiative approved last year included provisions to prioritize equitable TOD and affordable housing on the agency's surplus property.
