Pittsburgh transit agency to open customer service center

The new site will feature digital screens with real-time light-rail and bus information.

The Port Authority of Allegheny County next year plans to open a larger customer service center in downtown Pittsburgh.

The agency's board late last month approved amending an existing lease at the Heinz 57 Center to include a new 8,500-square-foot location. The lease will now run through 2030.

The agency's administrative offices have occupied the building's third and fifth floors since 2000.

The new location will house the service center, which will feature additional customer service windows and digital screens with real-time bus and light rail information. The authority also plans to relocate its customer service representatives to the new spot, authority officials said in a press release.

"We'll be able to centralize all of our customer service employees in one location at street level and open up room on the third floor to move employees from our information technology department over from the North Side," said David Donahoe, the authority's interim chief executive officer.

Since 2003, the authority's existing downtown service center has occupied a 2,100-square-foot storefront next to Mellon Square in Pittsburgh. Although the lease at that location expires by year's end, the service center will remain open until the new location is ready for occupancy.
