Metro-North kicks off White Plains Station renewal

MTA Metro-North Railroad has begun a full-scale renewal of its station in White Plains, New York.

The $94 million project includes refurbishment of entrances, along with installation of security cameras and speakers throughout the station.

In addition, crews will install LED lighting, a heated stairway and platform canopies with wood ceilings. Other amenities include USB chargers, Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity, as well as digital screens with train arrival information, Metro-North officials said in a press release.

Although the station is fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), workers will perform state-of-good-repair work to boost accessibility. For example, the project calls for a new elevator within the main entrance for customers to reach the side platform.

The White Plains station has the third highest ridership in the Metro-North system, second to Stamford and Grand Central Terminal.

While the first phase of the White Plains renewal project is underway, Metro-North crews also are rehabilitating track between Scarsdale and Hartsdale, New York. That work will lay the foundation for plans to begin refurbishing the Metro-North stations in those towns.

Additionally, crews are replacing switches between the Brewster and Southeast stations.

In early March, Metro-North announced plans to begin the White Station project.
