The California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA) late last week awarded more than $2.6 billion in grants for rail and transit projects throughout the state.

In Southern California, grants were awarded to projects that are critical to preparations for the 2028 Olympic Games, which will be held in Los Angeles.

Six major Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority projects — including light-rail extensions to Torrance and Montclair — received funding. In total, CalSTA allocated $330 million for several LA Metro projects.

Meanwhile, CalSTA set aside $875 million for Metrolink improvements, including a project to extend run-through tracks at LA Union Station so trains don't have to enter and exit from the north.

In San Francisco, CalSTA provided $123 million for Caltrain's electrification project. The funds will enable the railroad to increase the number of electric multiple units under procurement, lengthen platforms, improve wayside bicycle facilities and expand onboard Wi-Fi.

The Sacramento Regional Transit District will receive $40.5 million for expanded light-rail service to Folsom. Other funding will go toward obtaining 20 light-rail vehicles.

The larger grant program is being administered through the Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program, which receives funding through California Senate Bill 1 and proceeds from the state's cap-and-trade program. A complete list of grant awardees is available here.
