Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) and Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) this week received the Bay Area Metro Award, a new awards program to recognize positive impacts on mobility and resilience in the nine-county Bay Area region in California.
The awards program was launched jointly by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and the Association of Bay Area Governments last year.
SMART was recognized for the successful start of 43-mile rail service connecting the Sonoma and Marin counties, according to an MTC press release.
BART was honored for its 10-mile light-rail extension from the former Pittsburg Terminus to a pair of new stations at Pittsburg Center and Antioch in Contra Costa County.
Other winners include the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority, which in partnership with Amalgamated Transit Union Local 265 and Mission College created a workforce apprenticeship program for the authority's employees.
