MTA Metro-North Railroad today restored regular service on the New Haven main line following the rebuilding of three of five main line tracks that had been out of service for nine days during replacement work on the Atlantic Street Bridge in Stamford, Connecticut.

Connecticut Department of Transportation’s bridge project reduced the number of main line tracks available to Metro-North from five to two since the start of reconstruction on June 29, railroad officials said in a Metro-North press release.

During construction, several trains were combined and additional stops were added so that there was a minimal reduction in service frequency at New Haven Line stations. However, this solution created crowded conditions.

The reduced track capacity led to 10 fewer westbound trains toward Grand Central Terminal in the morning rush hour, and 13 fewer eastbound trains departing from Grand Central Terminal.

The bridge reconstruction was necessary to increase roadway capacity and improve pedestrian circulation near the Stamford Transportation Center. The project also includes provisions to construct another track and service platform.
