Caltrain and the San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans) in California have partnered with the Miles app to offer riders a rewards program to incentivize rail use.
Miles is an app-based platform that offers rewards — such as gift cars and tickets to local events — for choosing alternative and environmentally friendly modes of transportation.
During the one-year pilot program, Caltrain and SamTrans riders will be offered exclusive rewards through the app and will be eligible to compete in “public transit challenges.”
Anonymous travel data received from the pilot program will help inform future transportation planning, Caltrain officials said in a press release.
“This pilot is part of our ongoing endeavor to reduce traffic congestion by incentivizing transit and improving our service to better meet the transportation needs of Bay Area residents,” said SamTrans Chief Executive Officer Jim Hartnett.
