Bay Area Rapid Transit's (BART) board last week approved an updated plan for the proposed Irvington Station to be located between the Fremont and Warm Springs stations in Fremont, California.
The original proposal raised community concerns over traffic safety, congestion and parking near residential streets. As a result, BART updated the plan, which calls for a smaller, more cost-effective station, BART officials said in a press release.
The two-story station with an at-grade trackway, will prioritize pedestrian, bicycle and shared mobility access, and provide greater opportunity for transit-oriented development next to the station, officials said.
The city of Fremont is responsible for identifying and securing the necessary funding to design and construct the Irvington Station. Once all necessary funds are identified, BART will be responsible for operating and maintaining all elements of the new station and service.
BART has begun the project's preliminary engineering phase.
Irvington Station is part of the Warm Springs extension project, which involves 5.4 miles of track and a service extension from Fremont to the Warm Springs Station that opened in 2017.
