Starting in October, Sound Transit crews will begin construction on a temporary platform at Pioneer Square Station in Seattle in preparation for the Connect 2020 light-rail expansion project, Sound Transit announced late last week.
Link light-rail riders traveling through downtown Seattle will use the temporary center platform during Connect 2020 construction beginning in January 2020, Sound Transit officials said in a press release.
Connect 2020 includes a 10-week period of around-the-clock heavy construction to connect Sound Transit’s light-rail system in downtown Seattle to Mercer Island, Bellevue and Redmond.
Maintaining 12-minute intervals of service during the intensive construction will depend on operating two separate lines that meet at Pioneer Square Station, with a transfer at the center platform for riders continuing through downtown Seattle, Sound Transit officials said.
Up to 1,600 passengers at a time will exit trains onto the temporary center platform and cross over to reach the train on the other side, they said.
On the weekends of Oct. 12-13, Oct. 26-27 and Nov. 9-10, light-rail service between SODO Station and Capitol Hill Station will be suspended to accommodate the platform construction.
